  What IS ADSL?

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a means of connecting to your internet service provider which provides faster downloads than is possible with a standard modem. ADSL uses the existing copper-wire phone line, but in a more intensive way. Because of this more intense demand on the phone line, the use of ADSL is limited by the type of Telstra telephone exchange, and by the distance between that exchange and the subscriber. Generally speaking, households more than five kilometers from their exchange will not be able to use ADSL.

Click this link and enter your telephone number ( enter your number in the form 02 XXXX XXXX) to check whether ADSL is currently available at your exchange. Please note that availability at the exchange does not guarantee that you will able to receive ADSL, which also depends upon other factors such as your distance from the exchange and the type of Telstra cable/equipment in your immediate locality. A final check will be made upon application

What is the advantage of ADSL?

Apart from the faster download speeds, ADSL can be full-time without interfering with normal telephone and fax traffic. This means that in a business or office setting, the phones and fax do not have to be disconnected in order to send and receive emails, and there is no need for a second phone line. This is achieved with a filter which allows a full-time internet connection at the same time as incoming and outgoing phone calls.

What new equipment do I need?

To use ADSL, an ADSL modem is required. These are available from computer stores, and come bundled with the necessary fittings, cables and software. If you intend to make the ADSL connection available to your entire office network, more equipment may be needed.

  How fast are ADSL downloads?

ADSL download speeds depend on the quality of the phone line; the distance from the exchange, and the speed level subscribed to with your internet service provider. If the phone permits the use of ADSL, this may be a useful comparison of speed: using a standard 56k modem in ideal conditions, a half megabyte (500k) file will take 80 seconds to download. On a 128K ADSL connection, the same file arrives in 35 seconds; on a 512K connection, 9 seconds, on a 1M connection, 4.5 seconds. As with ordinary modems, actual speeds may vary with line conditions.

Why is NRG ADSL better than an 'unlimited' plan from some other ADSL provider?

The NRG ADSL plans are a higher quality product - literally 'better than unlimited'. To find out more, read on..

What is different about NRG ADSL plans?

Most plans for ADSL access in Australia are generally plans which offer either:

These plans offer very high quality outcomes - typically the access speeds (at least until shaping is enabled) are consistently high under most circumstances. However, usage beyond your cap generates either a potentially large excess usage bill, or a slowdown in performance which is so severe that your service is not longer justifiably able to be called 'broadband'.

NRG plans (one each at 256/64, 512/128 and 1500/256 speeds) are designed to offer Australian broadband users the experience that users in the USA and the UK are used to, which is:

This means our access is provided at a single, flat monthly rate (depending only on the peak speed of the ADSL line that you require).

The achieved performance in terms of download speeds and ping times is subject to variation based on your downloading habits over time, and upon underlying network load.

How much are the ADSL modems?

Computer stores are offering ADSL modems in a price range from $110 to $240. Cheaper models may utilise the USB port on your computer which may not be able to cope with the rate that data is transferred. Subscribers wishing to distribute their ADSL connection through an office network should seek a modem which connects to a network card, and includes a four port router and a filter (example price: Computer Discounts, Lismore $199 - $240).

Set up Fees and other Charges

Prices quoted are for monthly plans

A set-up fee of $160 applies to all plans

All ADSL connections are 12 month contracts

Monthly payments may only be made via credit card. The service can also be invoiced on a quarterly basis, payable in advance.

ADSL services are non-refundable.

Excess downloads/uploads beyond the included megabyte (MB) allowance per month are charged monthly in arrears at $0.11 (11 cents) per megabyte (MB).

Subscribers to NRG ADSL services agree to the terms and conditions given in the general NRG Acceptable Use Policy.

Each ADSL connection incurs a $160.00 Connection Fee (This is to cover the cost of the changes that must be made to your phone line at the telephone exchange to enable ADSL connections).

If ADSL link is disconnected within six months of Installation a $110.00 disconnection fee applies.

Changing the speed of a link (faster or slower) will incur a charge of $75.00.

If a static IP is required this can be provided for $10.00 per month.

All Prices include GST.

Set up costs must be paid before ADSL is provisioned by NRG, refunds of set up fee will not be possible after NRG has ordered the service to be altered at the telephone exchange as this money needs to be passed on to the phone company.

A premium service is also available on application for customers willing to pay for Service Guarantees for ADSL outages by the upstream Telco provider.

ADSL account application notes

When you apply for ADSL, you should be aware of certain obligations and conditions once the order form is received by NRG.

Firstly, please be aware that signing the application form means you acknowledge and accept the general NRG Terms and Conditions and these specific NRG ADSL Service Terms and Conditions. Please call us if you would like any help interpreting these documents.

ADSL 12 month contract Customers begin the 12 month contract upon Activation. The service is normally provisioned within 21 days and Activated by NRG no later that 7 days thereafter at which time NRG will commence billing the customer.

Customers wishing to terminate their ADSL service with NRG prior to the end of the first 12 months are liable to pay any balance outstanding on the full 12 months service charges (in addition to any outstanding excess charges and Activation fee).

In cases where the customer is terminating their ADSL service prior to the end of the first 12 months due to moving premises, but is ordering a new NRG ADSL service once the new line is active, the above paragraph also applies. However, the customer can apply to NRG to have any unused full month access charges (if charged as per the above paragraph) credited back to their account when ADSL is provisioned by NRG at their new premises. If the new application is rejected by the carrier, no credit can be applied.

Automatic ADSL Service Cancellations Please be aware that your NRG ADSL service will be automatically cancelled by Telstra and a new ADSL service will need to be ordered by you (including a new $160 Activation fee): when your Telephone account is cancelled; when you change location (even if taking the same number with you), or if you order an ADSL-incompatible product on the line on which ADSL is delivered.
We strongly advise that you contact us to discuss any pending changes to your phone service prior to making those changes.

Billing NRG recommend monthly charges via credit card as any requested changes to your account (eg speed or data change) will be actioned by our system at the start of the next billing period.

Therefore paying via credit card means you are able to make changes to your service on a monthly basis, whereas if you are being invoiced quarterly, any changes will occur at the start of the next quarter.

Notification Tax invoices, NRG Bulletins and automated data usage warning messages are sent to your NRG email address.

Please refer to the configuration sheet (supplied when your service is activated) for details of your NRG email address.

Special notice: The service can always be on, and it is your responsibility that you do not allow your computer to become a "server" uploading music files to the rest of the internet, as may occur with file-sharing programmes such as Napster. You will be personally responsible for these upload charges.
