BRAME AROUND THE WORLD

BRAME is an integral and active participant in International ME/CFS Awareness Day 12, a time when the universal symbol of the Blue Ribbon, or the BRAME enamel badge, is worn and promoted around the world.

As a result of the BRAME meeting in Parliament on 14 May 1998 an ALL Party Parliamentary Group on ME was set up in the UK Parliament in July 1998. Tanya was a patient representative on the Key Group and the report was published on 11 January 2002.

ME/CFS is an illness which does not recognise boundaries, affecting all socio-economic groups, ethnicities, ages and sexes. Following the tremendous response and success of BRAME and the Blue Ribbon in Great Britain, it was felt that as the illness does not recognise boundaries, nor therefore should the campaign or the Blue Ribbons.

With the Blue Ribbon as the universal symbol BRAME has now formed a worldwide network, and at present is in contact with 21 countries around the world. BRAME has been successfully launched in Australia, Germany, Ireland, France, New Zealand, Italy and the USA.

Other countries are asked to adopt the aims of BRAME and the Blue Ribbon, promote and convey the same symbolic message all over the world.

If everyone who has ME/CFS, and their families wore Blue Ribbons, then we must have an impact on heightening awareness.

ME in Westminster (Tony Blair Prime Minister UK) Source: UK Parliament Date: January 23, 2002

Mr. Anthony D. Wright (Great Yarmouth): Will the Prime Minister join me in welcoming the publication last week of the chief medical officer's report on ME, which has recognised for the first time that "ME is a genuine illness", and that "existing controversy cannot and should not be used as an excuse for inaction or unsuitable practice"?

Will he further congratulate all national and local ME groups--such as BRAME, which is based in my constituency and run by Tanya Harrison, an ME sufferer, and her mother, Christine--on their many years of campaigning and the support that has been given to other ME suffers?

The Prime Minister: I certainly congratulate my hon. Friend's constituents on the campaign that they have waged over a significant period, and I am pleased that the significance of ME is now properly recognised.

New Research on Parallels Between PPS and ME/FM

Now about ME/CFS: Dr. Bruno’s research has shown many parallels in signs and symptoms between PPS and ME/CFS. The most important parallel is in the brain. Research shows that many viruses can damage the brain stem. Here enters the work of Dr. Elizabeth Dowsett, our other speaker, a doctor and researcher with thirty years of experience with people with ME/CFS. In January 2001, Dr. Dowsett gave a presentation on the parallels between PPS and ME to the British Parliament.
