3. THE CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS :

So much is happening in this area, we want to tell you about it.

Our first Dance class has enjoyed an exciting program of work organised by their teacher, Tamara Smith.

They have had two separate workshops with guest tutors. Simon Adams, London City Ballet and Ballet teacher at the Northern Rivers Conservatory, and Rosemary Rath, a Tribal dance teacher. They also visited the Articulate Body Studio for a workshop. First week back next term they will be attending the Bangarra Dance Company's performance of "Ochres" at the Lismore City Hall.

A dance ensemble has been formed from students across the whole school. The ensemble will be auditioning for the 1996 North Coast Dance Festival, the Tropicarnival Gold Coast Dance Festival and The Dance Cafe.

Any parents interested in being part of the costume committee or sponsoring the ensemble, please contact either Noela McRorie or Tamara Smith. Two of our very talented dancers, Eve Prideaux and Toni Butler, are presently in Sydney auditioning for the Atlanta Olympics dance troupe. Good luck girls!

The Concert Band has expanded from 7 members last year to 19. It includes new Year 7 members, Lucinda Coman, Olivia Anderson, Astrid Lorange, Colleen Stanford, Nicole Hilton, Lara Youngson, Laura Johnson, Sarah Vaughan and Emma Jones.

Rebecca Boyle and Kate Mackie entertained the Senior Citizens at a luncheon recently. Kate and Joshua Boots have just completed recording "Hit the Road Jack" and "Quiet Love" with Peter Bull backing them, to audition for the Talent Development Project 1996.

A Jazz Group has been formed with professional live performances as their aim. Members at this point are Kate Mackie, Rebecca Boyle, James Dempsey, Ryan Gobbe, Ezra Szandala, Kim Jones, Alisha Kozianski and David Rose. This is a talented line up with further members possible.

A vocal group is to start early next term. All people who enjoy singing and are willing to give up a lunch hour a week, are welcome. Live performances are being planned. There are four highly experienced Music tutors in the school each week. Cassi Moreau is here every Monday and Thursday and tutors 15 students, in either singing or base guitar. Peter Hardaker is here Friday and he tutors 23 students in either keyboard or guitar. James Cox, tutors 7 students in drums on Tuesdays. Kel McIntosh, tutors saxophone, clarinet and flute. Our only problem is finding spaces in the CAPA area to have all of these activities running.

Year 12 Drama group projects will present a preview performance on the MPC stage Tuesday and Wednesday, 30 April and 1 May. Limited seating only. A preview of their individual performance pieces will be presented to "limited seating", 25 and 26 June. A public performance will be given during our Creative and Performing Arts Festival which is tentatively planned for 4, 5 and 6 September. Groups have workshopped 10 minute plays that deal with particular themes. The quality of our Year 12 students will ensure a truly memorable theatre experience.

Two Byron Bay High School teams will take on the best from Mullumbimby High and the 4th Wall Theatre Company at Theatre Sports for Youth Week at the Youth Activities Centre, Saturday, 27 April. It will be a great night with plenty of laughter and good fun for both performers and audience.

Year 11's "An Experimental Macbeth" will present a full public performance Week 10 Term 2.

What is "An Experimental Macbeth"?

A 'cut and paste' Macbeth that brings to life one of Shakespeare's great plays. A brilliant class of Year 11 students will act, chant, dance their way through the tragedy. Musical accompaniment will be a feature of this production with cast members using string and wind instruments, drums and various other percussion to accompany the action. All money raised will go towards the Creative and Performing Arts Centre.

The Visual Arts students have been busy as well. Seven students have art works in the Easter Art Classic. They are - Araby Steen, Daimen Carlaw, Ismail Chatt, Nicole Kilpatrick and Sarah O'Connor, and Year 12 students 1995, Jo Plummer and Danny Wright.

Students are prepared with boards and paint to work on their entry for the RSL Competition "How You See Australia 1996" during the holiday break. Entries are due in first week back. Art students have been challenged by Shirley Nelson, previous Matron of Byron Hospital to design a feature stained glass window for the foyer of the new building.

Youth Week Art Show is to be held at Mullumbimby on 27 April and Byron High students will be participating. Mr McKenzie's very talented and very large Year 11 class are keen to be part of this competition.

Early next term another group, yet to be decided, will take part in a Lismore City Council initiative to create a Totem Forest in heritage Park, Lismore. Early in May a 4 metre pole will be delivered to us to create our contribution for the park.

5. Real life tips from teenagers (What teenagers would like ...)

To talk with parents on an equal basis

To have clear boundaries

To be acknowledged for the good things they do

To know they're loved

To be listened to

To be treated as though they are wanted by their parents

To be believed in

To have parents believe in them

To be included

To have parents 'lighten up' around them.

... From M. Andreas

6. BBHS ON THE WWW (WORLD WIDE WEB) UPDATE:

As far as we can tell, we are the ONLY school on the NSW North Coast, north of Coffs Harbour, to have a Web page up and running.

Those with Internet access may like to look at our revised Home pages on http://www.nrg.com.au/BBHS.

If you get a 'yucky' looking index page try http://www.nrg.com.au/BBHS/ home.html. Last week's Parent Bulletin is there as well as some information about our school (no pictures of students yet but that is in the pipeline. This bulletin will also be there by early next week.

You may also like to access the launch pad to educational sites courtesy of Pulteney Grammar School in South Australia or the GLOBE program to see what it's about.

If you access our home pages please send an email message to the school at bbayhigh@nrg.com.au letting us know what you think of our efforts so far.

For those parents without Internet access at home or work If you want to see our home pages for the World Wide Web there are a number of options.

(a)Come to the P&C meeting on Tuesday, 16 April, when the BBHS home pages (and other aspects of the WWW will be demonstrated to parents attending.

(b) Visit friends who have Internet access and ask if they will help you access our home pages.

(c) You have a choice of various public access sites such as the Koo Cafe (in Marvel Street) or the Northern Rivers Telecentre (the home of NRG), Conway Street, Lismore.

For all parents

Future plans include having the school prospectus, school calendar and a page devoted to "Star" students and their achievement.

If you have any other ideas or would like to help with our home page please contact the school via email (see above) or FAX or phone.

7. PEDICULOSIS (HEAD LICE) :
